Philosophy
First impressions rarely tell the whole story.
Fish Out Of Water creates places and experiences that invite curiosity, possibility and connection.
For organisations, that meanscreative workshops, team experiences and commissioned projects designed around your people, place or purpose.
For everyone else, it might begin with an experience, a discovery, or even a future place to stay — perhaps it will be something you weren't looking for at all.
Sometimes that might mean confusing a paper flower for real ones. Sometimes it might mean encountering a familiar place differently, discovering something unexpected, or simply noticing what had previously gone unnoticed.
Fish Out Of Water creates the conditions for curiosity to become discovery and connection — inviting people to notice, respond and find meaning in their own way.
Who decides what an experience should mean?
The experiencer should be the protagonist.
Meaningful experiences leave room for people to notice, participate and interpret for themselves — becoming collaborators in the experience rather than recipients of a prescribed conclusion.
Fish Out Of Water isn’t designing things for people to remember. It’s designing conditions in which something might become worth remembering.
That requires a different approach to design. We call it Generous Design.
Generous Design considers not only what is being designed, but the frame around it .
The context, expectations and assumptions that influence how we experience something are part of its design too.
Sometimes changing that frame is enough to change what we notice. A familiar object in an unfamiliar place. Something ordinary treated as valuable. Something that appears not to belong until you look again.
